Tomatoes
I was researching some information for a client over this wk.end and found this very interesting. I had to share because I have seen this very often over the years in practice with my clients.
CAN TOMATOES CAUSE ACNE?
Fact: At first blush, tomatoes are a nutrient powerhouse, containing vitamins A,C, and K, as well as significant amounts of vitamin B6, folate, and thiamin. However, many acne sufferers will point to tomatoes a a culprit behind their breakouts. This myth seems to be true for those who are sensitive to tomatoes, and untrue for the rest of the population. Why tomatoes cause acne for certain individuals is still widely hypothesized. Perhaps it’s because of their high acid content or the fact that they are a member of the nightshade family, a grouping of edible and non-edible plants that contain solanine, a glycoalkaloid poison.
Takeaway: Whether you are sensitive to this food is an individual matter, but if you notice small bumps around your mouth or an increase in breakouts after ingesting nightshades (which include eggplant, potatoes, and many types of peppers), try avoiding them to see what happens.
Testimonial: I had a client that was breaking out around the mouth constantly. After a treatment, she would follow up with me and tell me her mouth area was cleared up. Then with in 1.5 weeks she would start experiencing the breakouts around her mouth again. I asked about her diet and she said she ate a lot of peppers every day. I suggested she cut all peppers and spicy foods out of her diet for at least 1 wk. She cut out all peppers and her skin cleared up immediately.
